Transmission output shaft axial play

I was under the G today trying to sort out an exhaust heat shield rattle (found it) so I decided to check the play at various points in the drive line. As many of you may know, my G has had a drive line vibration since, well, forever, that nobody seems to be able to find. I hand checked the axial play on the output of the transmission (at the flange where the homeokinetic shaft connects) and there is a very visible axial movement of the transmission flange. I estimate it to be about 1 -2 mm. Does anyone have the specification for the transmission output shaft axial play for a MBUSA 2003 G? I think it is the 722.6 box. Note that I am not talking about the normal axial play that occurs within CV joints of the homeokinetic shaft itself.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Transmission output shaft axial play

If you remove the shortshaft, maybe check if the locknut on the transmission output flange is still at the correct torque?

I don't have any 722.6 info. Maybe 4x4abc.com got manuals for this kind of transmission?

RE: Transmission output shaft axial play

Well, I lucked into finding an aftermarket rebuilders guide for the 722.6 transmission on one of the W124 websites (http://www.w124performance.com/docs/mb/transmission/722.6/trans_722.6_ATSG_2004.pdf). It seems to cover both MB and Chrysler applications of the 722.6 and it gives the output shaft axial end play specification as between 0.3 to 0.5 mm (0.012 - 0.020”). Knowing this I broke out my magnetic dial gauge, crawled under the G and measured my end play. Even though it looked bigger, it measures at 0.016" or 0.40 mm - exactly in the middle of the spec. If this document is correct, then I think things might be okay with the output shaft on my G. Still stumped about the original of the drive line vibrations. . . .

Thanks for the update.

Hunting driveline vibrations can be difficult.

Best to do is trying to isolate the issue by removing parts. Try running with front driveshaft removed, or with rear driveshaft removed. You need to lock your center diff then.
Try swapping different tireset etc etc.

On a slope you can even let the car running down, with tc in neutral to exclude the engine/transmission/shortshaft from the equation.

Good luck!

Re: Transmission output shaft axial play

If anyone has the document number for transmission assembly, I might be able to find the limits of output flange play- Via WIS.
